Murder by Death

I read cozy and historical mysteries, a bit of Paranormal/UF, and to mix it up, I read science and gardening books on occasion.

School holidays and Librarian tasks...

As a contractor for the school system I'm currently on school holidays for 2 weeks.  Contrarily, that means I'm not going to be keeping up on librarian requests.  There are other librarians, of course, but I think I'm the only one with enough spare time on my hands to check and clear the request queue devotedly M-F.

So if you request edits that aren't getting done in 24-48 hours, it's because I'm lolling on my couch, reading.  :)

But while I'm on the subject, some gentle reminders (please feel free to pass these along):

1.  Please don't try to remove valid ISBN #s from a record.  Those changes are going to be rejected.  Always.  Create a new record with the new ISBN.  If it's a record that combines a kindle ASIN with an ebook ISBN, remove the ASIN and submit a new book with the ASIN.

ISBNs will only ever be removed if they are for a different book entirely or numerically invalid.

2.  Speaking of ASINs, please don't add them to any edition that isn't specifically a kindle edition.  The BL imports have been combining the kindle/ebook editions but they should be separate.  Don't let these records fool you.

I know people want these separated (this is going to take forever, btw).

Also, if you see an ASIN field filled with what is obviously not an ASIN (most likely a repetition of the ISBN10 or 13), just delete the wrong number and leave the field blank, unless it's actually a kindle.

ASIN numbers will be removed from all non-kindle records.  Eventually.

3.  ASINs lead me to Kindles: kindle editions have ASINs.  Ebooks have ISBNs.  Conversely, if you're adding a new book with an ASIN, please choose "kindle".  If you're using an ISBN, please choose "ebook" from the format menu.

4.  If you submit a change to a book record or an author record and it doesn't happen as quickly as you'd like it to, re-submitting the request again and again will not make it happen faster, it will just irritate the librarian.  It has been scientifically proven that irritated librarians work more slowly than happy ones.

5.  If you add a new book, those go into the queue for librarian approval.  Why is this important to you?  Because if you add a new book that only has the Title, Author, and Cover, the librarian is very liable to curse at you under their breath, and then complete that book record with the data of the first edition they find.  If you don't specify the edition with an ISBN/ASIN* (or a publisher/pub date for older books) you're likely not going to end up with the edition you wanted.  If no information can be found, your record might even be merged with an existing record.  Please complete new book records with all the information you can reasonably find.

FYI: this librarian is always going to add print editions before ebook editions if you don't specify the one you want.

*Some current comics/manga are not published using the ISBN system so BLers adding new comics are mostly exempt from librarian grumbling.
